In NZ, the varietal is generally called Pinot Gris rather than Pinot Grigio and encompasses a wide range of residual sugar levels and styles. Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Gris is a nod towards some of the more aromatic, finer examples of northern Italian, higher altitude Pinot Grigio as well as referencing a little the wines of Alsace, but it's pretty much a Kiwi style - a Marlborough style. Astrolabe's Marlborough Rosé is a blend from across multiple Marlborough sub-regions. It's pretty pale peach blush colour comes from minimised skin contact. On the nose you'll find apricot, peach and orange blossom. The palate is fresh and dry with bright red apple, red current and rose petal. The Winemaker range showcases elements other than pure fruit, crafted with texture, complexity and ageworthiness in mind. These wines of tiny production are made from low-cropping single vineyards with a focus on organic viticulture and are vinified using traditional methods. The Farm is Simon Waghorn's own vineyard, situated in Grovetown, in the lower Wairau Valley. Nowadays, Riesling is not so widely planted in Marlborough, but it is perhaps one of the varieties best suited to Marlborough's cool climate. An aromatic, dry wine with attractive citrus and floral flavours. A light-textured, mineral wine with fresh apple and lemon flavours and a crisp, racy acidity. This wine is crafted to allow for long and graceful bottle-aging. It will reward careful cellaring. However, the wine is already drinking well.
